Uruguay regain UFWC title with 4-0 win over Paraguay

Uruguay 4-0 Paraguay

06 September 2016 Estadio Centenario, Montevideo World Cup Qualifier Scorers: Cavani (2), Rodriguez, Suarez (pen) One of the most successful teams in recent UFWC history, Uruguay regained the UFWC title and once again became Unofficial Football World Champions with a decisive World Cup Qualification victory over Paraguay. Despite terrible weather conditions, Uruguay were superb, with Edinson Cavani and man-of-the-match Luis Suarez demonstrating their world class. Uruguay opened the scoring midway through the first half, when Cavani converted a Suarez cross with a stunning right-foot finish. Then in the 42nd minute, a Gaston Ramirez corner was headed into the net by Cristian Rodriguez. And, in first-half injury time, Suarez won and scored a penalty to make the score 3-0. Ten minutes into the second half it was 4-0, following more great work from Suarez, who bamboozled the Paraguayan defenders before lobbing the ball into the six-yard box, where Cavani scored with a firm header. At that point it looked like Uruguay could have scored another four, but, perhaps mindful of the poor conditions, and that the match was already won, they shifted down a gear. Suarez, Cavani and Ramirez were substituted, and there were no more goals. Uruguay regain the UFWC title after a gap of just over three months. They last held the title from November 2015 through to June 2016, when they lost at the Copa America Centenario to Mexico. In terms of World Cup qualification, the win cemented Uruguay's place at the top of the CONMEBOL table, a point ahead Argentina and Brazil. If you like long-term betting, Uruguay are currently 40/1 to win the 2018 World Cup, and you can take advantage of a Paddy Power free bet. This was Uruguay's 24th UFWC title match win. They now need just one more win to make it into the UFWC's all-time top ten alongside France on 25 wins. Italy on 27 and Sweden and Germany on 28 must also be in Uruguay's sights. La Celeste are the third most successful South American team in UFWC history after CONMEBOL rivals Argentina and Brazil. There is not long to wait to see if Uruguay can move up the rankings, as the next UFWC title match - another World Cup Qualifier - sees Uruguay take on Venezuela in one month's time, on 6 October. Venezuela have only ever won one UFWC title match, back in 2006, but that was against Uruguay. (Uruguay swiftly gained revenge, and once again regained the title with a 4-0 win.) Venezuela have not won a game in World Cup Qualification, and are bottom of the group. But Uruguay should not underestimate La Vinotinto. In their last UFWC title match, during the Copa America, they very nearly took the title from Mexico, with the game ending in a 1-1 draw. And tonight, in World Cup qualification, Venezuela led 2-0 against Argentina, only for Argentina to come back to draw 2-2. We'll have coverage of the Uruguay vs Venezuela UFWC title match right here on 6 October. In the meantime, if you're new to the Unofficial Football World Championships you can find out all about the UFWC here. (Note: For the avoidance of confusion, this match was played on the evening of 6 September in Uruguay, which was the morning of 7 September in the UK.)
